Employment Plan

New Employment Plan Governs
Sheriff’s Employment Practices

The Sheriff’s new Employment Plan (the “Plan”) sets forth the general principles that will govern the Sheriff’s Office’s employment policies and procedures. The Plan also applies to current employees and all applicants or candidates for positions with the Sheriff’s Office.  The Plan was filed with the Court in the Shakman case on April 16, 2010 and approved by the Court on April 22, 2010.  The Plan does not apply to any Employment Action directed at Exempt Employees or Exempt Positions except as otherwise specifically provided in the Plan.  Click here for more information on Exempt Positions.

The Employment Plan was prepared to conform to the requirements of the Supplemental Relief Order entered in the Shakman case on October 30, 2008. The Plan was prepared with the assistance of the Shakman Compliance Administrator for the Sheriff of Cook County, as required by the SRO. The Plan provides structure and transparency to employment practices within the Sheriff’s Office so that the Sheriff’s employment practices will be free from “conditioning, basing or affecting any term or aspect of government employment upon or because of any political reason or factor,” as provided in the 1980 and 1984 Consent Decrees agreed to by the parties. The Employment Plan is a document that may be revised on a regular basis and updated versions will be posted on this website. The Sheriff's Office has drafted a number of procedures governing Employment Actions. Click here to read the Employment Procedures that are currently being used.  Please note that these procedures may be revised on a regular basis and updated versions will be posted on this website. The Sheriff's Office is drafting additional procedures and they will be posted as they become available.
